SPAN304: Introduction To Hispanic Literature
Course description: Conducted in Spanish, the course introduces the principles of literary analysis, based on reading and discussion of Hispanic literary texts. Includes fiction, drama, essay, and poetry from Spain and Spanish America.
This course was completed in Fall 2016, it fulfills MLO 1 & 3, and it was my second literature class. This class was very challenging but very interesting. It helped me to acquire a basic knowledge on Spanish and Latin American literature. I was exposed to all the literary genres and the class was divided into three sections: la narrativa/narrative, la poesía/poetry, and el teatro/theater. I learned basic methods to be able to conduct a literature analysis. We studied the lives of the authors and the historical events that inspired them to write.
We worked in groups to analyze short stories or poetry; trying to find the meaning behind it, symbolism, theme, rhetoric figures, among other important elements. We had a couple of quizzes, class and home-take exams. One of our assignments when we covered theater was to do a group presentation. My group decided to present on “La Casa de Bernarda Alba” writing by Federíco García Lorca. My group was very responsible and we met around four times to check on the status of our material. During our meetings we learn so much because we conducted and analysis. This really helped us to have a good presentation to the rest of the class.
Thanks to the assignments and exams I feel that I learned how to analyze literature but more importantly it helped me to find my passion, which is literature.
