This course is part of your Spanish language learning experience, and offers you the opportunity to interact in a personal way with members of the local Latino community, thereby enriching your understanding of Hispanic cultures and the Spanish language. As a community-based learning experience, the course provides students with career-related experience working collaboratively with community agencies to address community concerns / issues.
Span301s, helped me to fulfill MLO 1 & 3. This course is a service learning course given by Dr. Rafael Gómez, which had in-class components such as readings and site reflections but also going out into the community and completing a minimum of 30 hours of service. The class component helped me to understand the difference between voluntary (voluntariado) and service learning (aprendizaje-servicio). The course provided with the opportunity to define and understand compassion, social responsibility, justice, and diversity. Thanks to class assignments, presentations, and debates I was able to feel comfortable demonstrating my compassion to others, understand the importance of my responsibility to maintain a balance and fair society, and it encouraged me to think about social injustice issues in ways I had not before. It provided it me with knowledge and skills to work with others to promote social justice and it helped me gain awareness about my identity. In one particular assignment, I was able to write about my bibliografía lingüística (linguistic bibliography) analyzing how I became bilingual and explain my abilities in both languages.
I provided my service learning hours in Castroville Elementary. I was placed in a Dual Immersion Program. The program’s goal is for students to become bilingual (English and Spanish). I was able to assist Miss Lachino's class with a total of 26 students. I assisted the teacher by creating small reading groups, worked one on one with students that needed more help, and I also helped them in mathematics. This experience provided me with an excellent opportunity to work directly with students utilizing both languages Spanish/English.
