Span306: Culture and Civilization of Spanish Latin America fullfills MLO 1 & 3. Is a course that presents an overview of Hispanic Latin America. I took this course in Fall 2016. This course provided me with an amazing opportunity to explore the incredible civilizations of Latin America. We started this course analyzing the pre-Colombian civilization of America: The Olmec, Mayan, Toltec, Inca, and Aztecs among other smaller civilizations. This part of the class was very interesting and I was amazed with all the pyramids, temples, Gods, and the human sacrifices of the pre-Colombian civilizations.
After the pre-Colombian era, we focused in the Spanish conquest and colonization period. We talked about the first conquistadores such as Christopher Columbus, Hernán Cortés, Álbar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca among others. We analyzed the colonial period. We were able to learned about the economic, religious, social, and cultural aspects of the New Spain. We also learned about the La Republica de españoles y la Republica de los indios, las encomiendas, las Castas de las Razas, El repartimiento, among other systems that exploited indigenous people.
The last part of this course focus in the era of independence. The French Revolution and the United States independence were very influential for Latin America to seek for its independence. The most important person that helped New Spain to get its independence was Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. Simon Bolivar was the main leader that helped several South American countries to gain independence. After their independence, each country established their new government structure.
This course was intense, interesting, and unique. I was able to explore and learn about the difference and similarities of Latin America Countries. I really enjoyed the course.
