I migrated to the United State from Mexico when I was only 11 years old. It was very difficult in the beginning; to learn a new language and to adjust to a different culture. I started my school in the United States as a six grader. I had zero knowledge of English and I was very scared to go to school because I couldn’t understand a word. After the first six months of school, I decided to focus and learn English. It took me two years, and lots of discipline and motivation to be placed in English only classes.
Moreover, I never stopped speaking Spanish. It was not until I started high school that I was able to take Spanish classes. I would have to say that by far, Spanish is my passion; is my first and favorite language, which also led me to obtain a Spanish AA at Hartnell College and major in it, at California State University of Monterey Bay.
My journey at CSUMB has been one of the most incredible experiences of my life. During my first semester, I took a literature and a linguistic class. Both classes were very interesting but I decided to major in Spanish literature because to me literature provides an ability to understand many social, political and cultural aspects of the world. All the literature courses taken were so amazing and contributed to my academic and personal growth. I also took a couple of classes that covered Mexico’s and Latin America’s history, politics, and culture and literary work was also utilized in this courses. All of the courses taken at CSUMB have provided me with an intense knowledge of my the Spanish language.
My gratitude to all my Professors that motivated me to grow academically and that provided me with all the support to conclude a Spanish B.A. Culture and Literature emphasis.
