This was my first course taken online and it fulfills MLO 3 & 6. At the beginning of the semester, I was concern because I didn't know what to expect from this class. Once the class started I felt very comfortable because Profesor Andrade was very clear on the assignments. He maintained a great communication with students and he's always available to answer any questions. I right away knew that this course was going to be very intense and that I needed to be organize and have discipline to complete my readings and assignments.
This course gave me an amazing opportunity to learn about Áztlan; territory that belonged to Mexico and as a result of the Mexican American War, the United States acquired. We learned about the Mexicanos during the Spanish colonial period, the Mexican period, and the acquisition and settlement by the U.S. We learned about how the United States, guided by the ideology of Manifest Destiny took over more than half of Mexico’s territory. How President Jams K. Polk wanted to expand from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. How under his presidency, Mexico was provoked to start the fight and at the first opportunity, President Polk declared war to Mexico. The sign of Treaty of Guadalupe is what terminated the war. TheTreaty of Hidalgo gave the Mexicanos the option to stay or go to south to Mexico. We also learned that for those that decided to stay in their homeland their rights were never respected.
Then we started to learn about the culture of the Mexicanos in the United States. How some subcultures appeared in the mid of the 20th century, such as Pachucos. We also learned about the importance of the Chicano Movement; a movement that fought for the rights of Mexican Americans in the United States.
